Whisper · concept work, Bilder Studio.

A product photography brief sets out what you sell, who the images need to reach, what they must communicate and where they will appear. Add product references, deliverables, budget, dates and a person who can approve the work. The template below gives you a starting point for photography, directed AI or a combination of both.

In one minute

- Send references that reveal the details the images need to reproduce.
- Separate new compositions from exports of the same frame, and count them separately.
- Feedback works best when it names the frame, identifies the issue and connects it to the brief.

You do not need to arrive with every image worked out. I need to understand the product and the brand well enough to develop a direction that belongs to them. A useful brief makes the fixed requirements clear and identifies the decisions we still need to make together.

## Download the product photography brief template

The free brief has seven sections covering the brand, products, deliverables, creative direction, schedule, budget and anything still undecided. It is a four-page PDF, with two pages to fill in and a cover at each end. You can complete it on screen or print it.

The product imagery brief: seven sections, two pages to fill in.

Prefer Word or Google Docs? Copy the questions below into your own document and add space where you need it. A large range can have a separate product spreadsheet and shot list attached; there is no useful reason to force everything onto one page.

SectionWhat to writeHow to write it

1. The brand and the goalBrand name and website; who the images need to reach; what the images should help that person understand or do; brand values and visual characteristics to carry through.Describe the job of this set in terms someone outside the brand can understand. “Introduce our refillable bottle and show how it fits into a daily routine” gives a different starting point from “replace the product listing images for every size”.
2. The productsProducts, sizes and colourways; references available, including photographs, dimensions and packaging artwork; details that must stay accurate; references or information still missing.Name the exact version. If packaging is changing, identify which artwork is final and which photographs show the previous design.
3. The deliverablesProduct, view or scene, intended placement and quantity for each image; required crops, dimensions, file types and space for copy; where the images will run, for how long and in which markets; any retailer or platform specifications to attach.Separate new compositions from exports of the same frame. Include usage information so it can be addressed in the proposal and agreement, alongside the production requirements.
4. The creative directionReferences you like, with a note explaining each choice; references you dislike, and what to avoid; people, settings, materials and atmosphere to explore; anything that must depict a particular real person or location, or must be captured on camera; anything you would like the creative director to propose.Brand guidelines tell me which visual decisions are established. References help explain the direction for this particular campaign. Send both when you have them.
5. The schedule and reviewFinal delivery date and launch date, if different; date the product information and references will be ready; person gathering feedback and approving the work; when they and any other reviewers are available.Give the date you need usable files so the provider can propose a production and review schedule. Allow time for the people approving the work to see it before delivery.
6. The budgetBudget or working range; the images you need first; what could be reduced or postponed if the full brief costs more.A working budget range helps us discuss what to include in the scope. You can use the [product photography cost guide](https://bilder-studio.com/journal/ai-product-photography-beauty-brands/) to compare what quotes include before deciding by the headline price.
7. Anything elseOpen questions, dependencies or approvals; existing imagery that the new set should sit alongside; anything else that affects production or delivery. For a physical shoot, add sample availability, shipping and return arrangements. For AI production, note any missing views or product details that need resolving. If you are considering both, explain the result you need and ask for a proposed approach.

## A filled-in brief example

This is a fictional example created for this guide. The product and proposed images are concept work, not a client brief, a completed commission or evidence of a product's performance. It shows how the questions above can become a usable starting point.

![The Bilder Studio product imagery brief filled in for a fictional water bottle: the brand, the goal and the products](https://bilder-studio.com/Projects/product-imagery-brief-filled-example-brand-and-products.webp?v=36b5c7f9)

[See the whole completed example as a PDF](https://bilder-studio.com/downloads/bilder-studio-product-imagery-brief-example.pdf).

The brief gives a reason for the creative choices while leaving room to develop them. It also separates what is known from what still needs an answer. In your own version, replace those open items with dates, filenames and names as soon as they are agreed.

## Which product references should you send?

Send references that reveal the details the images need to reproduce. High-quality product photographs can be the starting point for AI imagery of an existing product, with a new setting built around it. The product's identity remains part of the brief whichever production method you choose.

Use this as a reference checklist:

- Clear views of the front, back and relevant sides, including any angle planned for the final images.
- Close views of important features such as a closure, clasp, dispenser, seam or label.
- Dimensions, or a reliable size reference, when scale matters.
- Final packaging artwork and the correct logo files where needed.
- Colour, surface finish and formula references relevant to the requested images.
- A note identifying older packaging, unavailable views or details still being developed.

A mood image cannot confirm the exact construction of a product. If a back label is not visible, flag it as missing. If a reflective cap changes appearance between photographs, explain its actual finish. Those are questions to resolve before approving the final image.

## How to make a moodboard useful

A useful moodboard explains what to take from each reference. Mark whether an image is there for its light, colour, material, composition or casting. Otherwise, two people can look at the same picture and notice completely different things.

For the fictional bottle, “calm and premium” leaves most decisions unresolved. “Soft light from the left, a single shadow across a plain room, pale blue around the bottle and room for a headline on the right” gives us something we can discuss and test.

The references can come from outside the product category. A folded paper sculpture might suggest the background's shape; a room might suggest the light. Explain the connection. The aim is to develop a direction for your brand, rather than reproduce somebody else's campaign.

Explain dislikes just as precisely as the things you like. “Avoid this orange colour cast, but keep the close crop” is more useful than rejecting a whole reference as wrong. When references contradict one another, decide which quality has priority.

Name the decisions you would like the creative director to explore. In this example, the palette and product are fixed, while the arrangement of the room and its light is for the creative director to propose.

## Turn the brief into a shot list

A shot list translates the brief into individual images that can be quoted and reviewed. Give each composition a simple identifier, then list its exports underneath. This makes it easier to see whether “six files” means six different images or several versions of fewer images.

For the fictional bottle, the list could be:

FrameWhat it needs to showPlanned exports

A: Product viewComplete bottle with the cap closed, pale backgroundOne square image for the brand's product page

B: Campaign still lifeThe bottle in a room crossed by daylight, with space for copyOne wide website image and one vertical social crop, subject to composition checks

C: Material detailThe cap, the loop and the matte surface at a closer scaleOne vertical supporting image

That example contains three compositions and four final files if the campaign frame supports both crops. If the vertical version requires a different arrangement, add that work to the scope. The suggested crops need checking against the actual dimensions your designer or channel requires.

Placement can also change the creative treatment. [Google Merchant Center's main-image requirements](https://support.google.com/merchants/answer/6324350?hl=en) call for the actual product to be represented accurately and prohibit promotional overlays. A campaign image designed to carry a headline therefore needs to be planned separately from that listing requirement.

If you are unsure which views to commission, the [beauty product photography guide](https://bilder-studio.com/journal/beauty-product-photography/) explains the different jobs a product frame, texture study, model image and campaign still life can do.

## Agree the decisions and the feedback process

Before production, confirm what is fixed, what can be explored and who can approve each stage. For my AI work, [the brief informs the art direction](https://bilder-studio.com/work/muse/), the setting and any cast we build. Once a frame is selected, I retouch and finish it carefully, checking the product against the supplied references.

Timing depends on the scope and the challenges within it. Reference readiness and how quickly feedback comes back also affect progress. Agree review points and the included revision scope in the proposal, rather than assuming a standard turnaround applies to every project.

Feedback works best when it names the frame, identifies the issue and connects it to the brief:

Broad commentFeedback the creative can act on

“It needs to feel more premium.”“Frame B is too busy for our pared-back direction. Remove the extra prop and give the bottle more space.”

“The product looks wrong.”“The cap in frame A is taller than in the approved front reference. Please match that proportion.”

“Make it work for social.”“In the vertical crop, keep the whole closure visible and leave the agreed clear area for copy.”

Ask the person collecting feedback to resolve conflicting requests before returning the list. A correction to product accuracy, a refinement within the agreed direction and a new creative direction are different requests. Make that distinction visible so any effect on scope or timing can be discussed.

### Before you send the brief

- The products and packaging versions are identified.
- References show the details that matter, and missing information is flagged.
- Each required image has a purpose and destination.
- Compositions and exports are counted separately.
- The direction includes reasons, with fixed and open choices distinguished.
- Budget, delivery date and the person approving the work are included, or explicitly undecided.

## What to send me

Send your product imagery brief, the available references and where the images need to appear. Rough notes are fine if some decisions are still open. I can help develop the direction and work out what the references and deliverables require through my [AI beauty product photography service](https://bilder-studio.com/ai-beauty-product-photography/).

If you are still choosing a production method, the [AI product photography vs a photoshoot guide](https://bilder-studio.com/journal/ai-product-photography-vs-photoshoot/) covers the decisions to weigh before commissioning the work.

## Common questions about product photography briefs

### What should a product photography brief include?

Include the brand and audience, the products, the purpose of the images, product references, visual direction, deliverables, usage, budget, dates and approval contact. Mark missing information clearly. A brief can start a discussion before every detail is settled.

### Can I use this template in Word or Google Docs?

Yes. Copy the seven sections on this page into Word or Google Docs and add your answers, links and shot list. The supplied download is a fillable PDF with two pages to complete.

### Is a moodboard enough to brief a photographer?

A moodboard communicates a visual direction, but it does not necessarily specify the products, quantities, placements, budget or deadline. Send it with those practical requirements and explain what you want to take from each reference. A few clearly explained choices can be more useful than a large board with no notes.

### How do you brief AI for product photography?

Use the same brief you would send a photographer: the brand and the goal, the products, where the images will run, the budget and the dates. For AI imagery of an existing product, supply clear references for the details that must be reproduced and agree how the finished frames will be checked. Describe the result you need; the creative director can propose the visual direction and production approach without you having to write generation prompts.
